Soul in his Eva Unit-01:  His mother, Yui

About Shinji:  (This is in the no spoilers section of my page)  Shinji is the 3rd Child.  He has no mother and no other siblings, and was living with his teacher until he was summoned by his father to NERV Headquarters.  He was ordered to pilot Evangelion Unit-01, and was forced to after he saw Rei Ayanami, all bandaged up and hurt, and he piloted it so Rei wouldn't have to.  He doesn't like his father very much, and is living with Misato.

Past:  Shinji Ikari is the real child of Gendo and Yui.  He was brought to NERV the day his mother's sync tests were going to occur, and while Shinji watched, Yui was absorbed into Eva-01.  After that his father abandoned him for Rei.  (side note - the above picture seems to traumatize Shinji.  He sees it ALL the time)  Shinji went to go live with his teacher and ended up staying there until Gendo called for him.  Shinji had run away from Gendo three years before the series started, and hadn't been to his mother's grave since then.  (Click on the above image for a larger version)

Shinji:  Shinji fears being hated.  He lives his life on what others want him to do, and not by his own choice.  He lives trying to make others happy.  He is friends with Rei Ayanami, Touji Suzahara, Kensuke Aida, Asuka Sohryu (sometimes), Kaoru Nagisa, and (sort of) Ryoji Kaji.  By the 12th genesis, he has gotten a higher sync ratio than Asuka, but basically he broke down in the 10th genesis when he was absorbed by Eva-01.  The beginning of his "badness with eva" started after he was forced to attack Unit-03 when it became Bardiel.  He didn't know who piloted it, but didn't want to fight it.  The dummy plug was used and Shinji had to watch as Eva-01 torn Eva-03 apart.  When he found out who the pilot was, he threatened to destroy NERV headquarters in his anger, and quit.  After Eva-02's head landed in one of the shelters, he returned to NERV and Kaji convinced him to go back and pilot.  Shinji piloted the Evangelion and was absorbed when the power on his Eva went out and the Evangelion berserked giving him a 400% sync ratio.  He really went when he was forced to destroy Kaoru, the 17th Angel and 5th child.  Asuka was unconscious, he was scared to speak with Rei because he knew it was not the same Rei he'd know, Kensuke and Touji had moved, and Kaji was dead.  He had no friends in the world and even rejected Misato's touch.  Because of this, he became close to Kaoru.  This was his undoing, for he was forced to kill his only friend the day after he met him.  In End of Evangelion he controls 3rd impact.

Shinji in "The World that could have Been":  In this parrallel world Shinji is a "normal" 14 year old boy.  He is perverted and seems to be as obsessed with females as Touji and Kensuke in the normal world.
